This project aims to modernize U.S. economic statistics by evaluating the integration of high-frequency private-sector data, such as credit card transactions, job postings, and online prices, into existing measurement frameworks. It will identify practical and conceptual challenges while exploring vulnerabilities in the current statistical system. Through three research conferences scheduled between late 2025 and early 2027, the initiative will convene academic economists, government statisticians, private-sector experts, and data providers to identify alternative data sources, assess methodological innovations, and promote collaboration. Complementing related modernization efforts, the project seeks to support the development of more timely, granular, and resilient economic indicators. Expected outcomes include enhanced understanding of measurement needs, strengthened partnerships across sectors, and foundational progress toward a more adaptive U.S. economic statistical system.
