Three New Directors Elected to NBER Board, Fall 2026
Mark Mason, Jack Porter, and Mark Wolfson were elected to the NBER Board of Directors at the Board’s September 28 meeting.
Mason, an at-large board member, is the Executive Vice Chair and Senior Executive Advisor to the Chair and CEO of Citigroup. He served as Citi's Chief Financial Officer from February 2019 to March 2026, providing financial stewardship during a period of substantial macroeconomic disruption. He joined Citi in 2001 and held a variety of roles including CEO of Citi Private Bank and Citi Holdings; prior to joining Citi he was director of Strategy and Business Development at Lucent Technologies. He serves on the Microsoft Board of Directors and is Vice Chair of the Howard University Board of Trustees. Mason earned his undergraduate degree at Howard University and holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Porter represents the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he holds the Richard E. Stockwell Distinguished Chair in Economics. He is an econometrician whose research addresses core problems in econometric theory such as statistical treatment rules, moment inequality identification, and inference under weak instruments. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society. Porter received his AB in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Harvard University and his PhD in Economics from MIT.
Mark Wolfson, also an at-large member, is a Founder and Partner of Jasper Ridge Partners, a wealth management and private investment firm. He joined the Stanford Business School faculty in 1977 and became a chaired professor and Associate Dean before joining the Robert M. Bass/Oak Hill organizations in 1995. He continued to teach courses at Stanford on investment management and philanthropic strategy until 2025. He has been an advisor to the Investment Committee of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and serves on the board of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the advisory board for Stanford's Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program. He is President of Arrow Impact, a charitable foundation focused on creating pathways to economic prosperity for under-resourced communities and on improving the efficiency of the philanthropic ecosystem. Wolfson earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.
The Board also re-elected at-large directors Mohamed El-Erian and Lisa Jordan, Timothy Bresnahan, who represents Stanford University, Bo Honore, who represents Princeton University, and Maureen O'Hara, who represents the American Finance Association. Kathleen Cooper and John Reed were elected to emeritus rank.
