Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
Artificial intelligence (AI) is considered by many to be the next industrial revolution, and AI is finding applications across many, perhaps most, economic sectors. There are fundamental unanswered questions in the development of AI tools and in the degree to which they can help or harm healthcare quality and efficiency.
With the support of the NIH, the NBER Center for Aging and Health Research will convene a research conference in Stanford, CA, on Wednesday, June 2 and Thursday, June 3, 2027. The program will be organized by Nikhil Agarwal (MIT and NBER) and Kevin Schulman (Stanford University).
The organizers welcome perspectives from economics, computer science, medicine, and other disciplines. Submissions are welcome on any subject related to the use of AI in healthcare. Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to:
- AI and clinical decision-making
- AI adoption, productivity, and the healthcare workforce
- AI in administration, billing, and fraud
- Patient-facing AI, including digital first primary care, AI assistants, and digital mental health services
- AI in biomedical research and innovation
- Health data infrastructure and interoperability
- Implicit bias in and variations in access to AI resources
- Market structure and incentives for AI adoption
- AI for aging populations and caregiving
- Development and clinical and regulatory evaluation of new AI tools
The conference is open to research at different stages of completion. To be considered for the conference program, research should be at or near completion and a paper must be submitted. The organizers will also consider earlier-stage projects for poster presentations. Researchers may submit a long abstract to be considered only for a poster presentation. Authors should submit their paper or abstract at the link that best suits their presentation preference, but the organizers will invite authors to give an oral or poster presentation based on research stage and availability of space. Please do not submit the same item twice.
To be considered, abstracts must be received by 11:59pm ET on Thursday, February 18, 2027. Authors chosen to present will be notified by early April.
Submit complete or nearly complete papers to be considered for the conference program using this link:

The NBER will cover economy class travel and hotel expenses for up to two authors per paper on the conference program, and one author per poster presentation, subject to NBER travel regulations and federal grant requirements.
Travel and accommodation funding is also available for a limited number of graduate students who are interested in attending the workshop. Preference will be given to students who are already carrying out research on topics related to the conference theme. Graduate students should apply using the following link by 11:59pm ET on Thursday, February 18, 2027:
