The Law and Economics of Permitting

DATE: April 20, 2026 to April 20, 2029

This project supports a series of three workshops – two working meetings and one capstone conference, all held in Washington DC – that will bring together legal academics, economists, and various federal agency staff and Federal Reserve economists with expertise on the law and economics of permitting.

Edward L. Glaeser, Co-Principal Investigator

Edward Glaeser is the Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics at Harvard University. His research ranges broadly within urban economics, exploring the determinants of city growth and the role of cities in fostering idea transmission and other agglomeration economies.

Zachary Liscow, Co-Principal Investigator

Zachary Liscow is Professor of Law at Yale Law School. His wide-ranging work in law and economics currently covers tax policy, benefit-cost analysis, and infrastructure construction costs.

Heidi L. Williams, Co-Principal Investigator

Heidi Williams is a Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College. Her research focuses on how society can best support science and innovation, and how we can best ensure that science and innovation generate broad benefits to society. She has been an NBER affiliate since 2010.
