Review of Economics and Statistics Fellowship for NBER Summer Institute
The Review of Economics and Statistics (REStat) will sponsor five early-career researchers from any under-represented group in the U.S., including, African American, Arab American, Latinx American, and Native American/Pacific Islander, to participate in the applied microeconomics research meetings at the 2023 NBER Summer Institute. In past years, economists from more than 400 institutions have presented and discussed new research findings at the meetings that collectively comprise the Summer Institute.
The 2023 NBER Summer Institute is scheduled to be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Each REStat Fellowship will cover travel costs to attend this conference, and local hotel accommodations for up to four nights, up to a maximum of $2000. Travel reimbursements will be subject to the NBER’s travel regulations which can be found at http://conference.nber.org/confer/travelreg.html.
To be eligible for fellowship support, applicants must be members of an under-represented group in the U.S., must have received a Ph.D. in economics in 2012 or later, and must be conducting research in one of the sub-fields of applied microeconomics that hosts a meeting during the third week of the 2023 Summer Institute, the week of July 24 to 28. The relevant sub-fields are: Economics of Aging, Economics of Children, Crime, Development Economics, Education, Energy and Environmental Economics, Health Economics, Labor Studies, Law and Economics, and Public Economics. Details and dates of the 2023 meetings may be found at

no later than 11:59 pm EDT on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. Applications that are not complete by that time will not be considered.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of Raymond Fisman (Boston University and NBER), Will Dobbie (Harvard University and NBER), and other REStat editors. The committee will place particular emphasis on the capacity of the applicant to benefit from the research exposure and interactions that the Summer Institute offers. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decisions by Friday, May 12, 2023.
Selection as a REstat Fellow supports attendance at the 2023 Summer Institute, but does not guarantee an opportunity to present a paper. Decisions about which papers to include on the meeting programs are made by the conference organizers. Information on submitting a research paper for consideration may be found at

The submission deadline for papers is 11:59pm EDT on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.
