NBER Anti-Spam Engine

If you have been directed to this page from an error message in a returned email message, please read the following:

To reduce the flood of spam messages received at the NBER, we are filtering incoming mail based on content. Messages with content similar to typical spam messages are rejected. The reasons for rejection include:

  • Many exclamation marks or dollar signs
  • Lines of all-capital letters
  • Vulgar language
  • Phrases such as "Free Money", "This is not spam", "Click here to be removed", "Refinance your Mortgage",etc

and many others. It is possible that a legitimate message may be rejected, for which we offer our most sincere apologies. In that case we hope you will resend the message after removing any problematic text. If the problems are not obvious to you, it may be easier to add text that our spam recognizer knows are typical of legitimate mail. These include:

  • Conference

  • Economics
  • Department of Finance
  • School of Business
  • Business School
  • University of

Our spam recognition engine (Spamassassin) will reduce the spam score for messages including those phrases.

You may also use the form to send mail to any nber.org address.

We have the ability to tune the filter to reduce incorrect rejections. Please forward examples of incorrect rejections to mohan@nber.org with the subject line "false positive". Thank you.

Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience and always remain available to help.
