2020, Hugh Rockoff, "NBER and the Evolution of Economic Research 1920-2020"
Presenter
Hugh Rockoff, Rutgers University and NBER
The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) was founded one hundred years ago, on January 23, 1920, to "encourage ... investigation, research, and discovery, and the application of knowledge ... in the fields of economic, social, and industrial science." At the recent American Economic Association Annual Meeting, a panel of NBER research associates documented and reviewed the organization’s contributions to economic science. Hugh Rockoff of Rutgers University reported on the NBER’s development of measurements of national income, motivation for which grew out of Progressive Era concerns about income inequality.
