Dear NBER Researchers -

I am writing to report on several NBER news items and to outline
plans for the 2018 Summer Institute.

First, the next issue of the _NBER Reporter_ will list awards
received by NBER-affiliated researchers during the past year.  If you
received an honor during 2017 that you would like to include, please
send a short description -- no more than 25 words -- to my assistant,
Magdalen Blankenship (magdalen_at_nber.org) by Sunday, February 18.  Please
include "2017 Awards" in the email subject line; if you shared your
award with other researchers, please include that information.  To keep
the list of manageable length, we cannot include honors bestowed by
researchers' home universities, such as named chairs.

Second, this Sunday, February 4, is the deadline for nominating
researchers for potential Faculty Research Fellow and Research Associate
status.  If you have a candidate to propose, please follow the
directions in the email that you received from Denis Healy on January 17
with the subject line "NBER Nominations."  If you cannot find that
message, please email Denis (dhealy_at_nber.org). I hope that you will be
particularly attentive to nominating researchers from groups
historically under-represented in the economics profession.

Third, there have been several leadership transitions in the last
year.  I am very grateful to the researchers who have taken on new
responsibilities:

* David Autor and Alex Mas have become co-directors of the Labor Studies
Program, succeeding David Card.

* Leah Boustan and William Collins have become co-directors of the
Development of the American Economy Program, succeeding Claudia Goldin.

* Anne Case joins David Cutler as a co-director of the NBER's
NIA-supported Center for Aging and Health Research, succeeding Kate
Baicker.

* Gita Gopinath and Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas have become co-directors
of the International Finance and Macroeconomics program, succeeding
Jeffrey Frankel.

* Nicole Maestas has become director of the NBER's SSA-supported
Disability Research Center, succeeding David Autor, who will remain as
the Center's associate director.

* David Robinson has become director of the Entrepreneurship Working
Group, succeeding Antoinette Schoar.

* Antoinette Schoar and Amir Sufi have become co-directors of the
Corporate Finance Program, succeeding Malcolm Baker.

Finally, the 2018 Summer Institute will take place between July 9
and July 27.  The current schedule is posted at

http://conference.nber.org/confer/2018/SI2018/SI2018.html

The call for papers is posted at

http://www.nber.org/callforpapers/CallSI2018.html

and the deadline for submissions is March 19.  On the afternoon of
Tuesday July 10, Raghu Rajan of the Booth School of Business at the
University of Chicago, the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India
(2013-16), will deliver the Martin Feldstein Lecture. The next day,
Wednesday July 11, will be devoted to an all-day conference on "The
Financial Crisis _at_ 10."  The 2018 Methods Lectures will be presented on
Sunday afternoon, July 22, by Isaiah Andrews of MIT and Jim Stock of
Harvard.  They will be lecturing on "Weak Instruments and What to Do
About Them."

All best wishes for the spring semester. I look forward to seeing
you in July if not before.

Jim Poterba
