Dear EEE members:

You already received Jim Poterba's email below, about how you can nominate graduate students to attend the Summer Institute by May 9. But I would like to make some additional points.

First, we FORMERLY had EPA funding to support travel for grad students, but that funding has disappeared, so it will be up to you whether to support your graduate student's travel using your own grants.

Second, the invitation list is managed by the co-organizers, so this year you can send your nominations to Spencer Banzhaf (hsbanzhaf_at_gsu.edu) and John List (jlist_at_uchicago.edu ).

Third, Jim Poterba has asked us to favor grad students who are finishing or on the market, and NOT to favor Boston-area universities. Our space is indeed limited, so we will not have more than a couple students from any one university.

Thanks, Don

Subject: Nominating Graduate Students for NBER Summer Institute

Dear NBER Family Members -

As in past years, the NBER will welcome promising graduate students
to this year's Summer Institute on a space-available basis. If you
have a student who you think would benefit from attending, please send a
one- or two-paragraph nomination statement to your Program Director, with a copy to Rob Shannon (rshannon_at_nber.org), by WEDNESDAY, MAY 9.
Please include a description of your student's work, his or her contact information, and when he or she will be completing graduate study.
Please be mindful of the constraints that we face: several of our Summer Institute meetings are approaching the size limits of the rooms at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. To avoid situations in which there is no space for our registered participants, it is very important for graduate students who are attending to be on the invitation list and to be registered for Summer Institute.

Many programs will be able to accept only a fraction of the student nominations as a result of space constraints. We will nevertheless strive to be as inclusive as possible. Priority will be given to students who were on the job market this year, or who will be completing their Ph.D.s next year. Students who are selected to participate will receive invitations from the NBER conference department in late May or
early June. Participating students are invited to join in Summer
Institute lunches, but they will need to cover their own travel and
lodging expenses. In the past, some NBER affiliates have used their
research funds, or helped their students to find other funds, to defray their travel costs.

Thank you for your help in making the Summer Institute an exciting and vibrant gathering. All best wishes.

Jim
