Dear EEE members:
1. Thanks for your feedback on joint meetings with other groups. Your responses were 2-to-1 in favor of joint meetings generally (giving a variety of reasons). We will continue to plan a joint meeting with another group whenever we have good reason, but we can certainly try it both ways. The NEXT Spring 2013 meeting will NOT be joint with any group. It will be in Cambridge, on a Thursday-Friday (not yet set).
2. The usual practice of NBER is to provide one SI-wide group clam-bake dinner per week, on a Wednesday, for all programs meeting that week. We have been lucky to have EEE-only dinner on the Monday, as part of the EPA grant's cost-sharing arrangement. The EPA grant has ended, but unspent funds are leftover for some travel this coming summer, 2012, and Jim Poterba has agreed to fund our special dinner one more time. So, starting 2013, we have no Monday EEE-dinner.
3. Also starting 2013, without the EPA grant, we face the usual NBER travel reimbursement rules<http://www.nber.org/~confer/2012/SI2012/traveregbs.html> , which cover only NBER-affiliates (RAs and FRFs), and only for "$100 per day of participation, up to a maximum of $500." Many in EEE are joint with other programs and are encouraged to stay for more than just the two-day EEE program (to get more than $200 toward your travel reimbursement). NBER rules do not pay for travel of non-NBER-affiliates, EVEN IF THEY ARE ON THE PROGRAM AS AN AUTHOR OR DISCUSSANT. It was the EPA grant that we used to fund travel of other authors or discussants. (If you can think of any other funder to replace the EPA, let me know; otherwise write your member of Congress about EPA funding.)
