Dear EEE:
Paul Rhode (Michigan and NBER) is interested in co-ordinating an application to the NSF for a conference on "disasters"; see the email trail below, and the attached NSF letter (which I also sent earlier). We are interested to know who in EEE might want to participate, and who in EEE might want to help lead the EEE portion of this proposal for a conference joint between EEE and DAE. Please write back to both of us if you are interested; I am on vacation for the next week or two, so please carry on a conversation with Paul in the interim, and we'll see where we stand when I get back mid-July. We can also meet at the SI. Thanks. Don

Hi, Yes, Aug 15 would be the first available date. We would have to move
apace to reach that deadline. (The NSF does have a rapid funding option but
that is likely inappropriate.) Time at the summer institute is available
for getting people on the same page.

Paul

Hi, Paul. :Yes, we are always interested in such possibilities. I'm not personally working on "disasters" aspects of environmental and energy economics, and I would have to check before knowing how many EEE members really ARE working in that area. Also, what kind of conference do you have in mind? Funding? Book? Any more thoughts? Seems like it is a good fund-raising opportunity, however, especially given the new NSF announcement. Did you have in mind we should apply there? (if you've not seen it let me know and I can forward it to you.) Also, BTW, I'm on vacation right now for another couple weeks, so might not answer your next email right away, but I do come in from the campsite periodically to check email.

Thanks, Don

Subject: NBER conference ideas

Dear Don Fullerton,

I am writing at the suggestion of Claudia Goldin to inquire whether
you and the Environmental and Energy Economics program would like to
explore holding a joint conference on the long-term impacts of
environmental disasters with the NBER Development of the American Economy
program.
In light of the ongoing Gulf oil spill, this is a topic of significant
current interest. I am sure that many members of EEE are devoting
considerable thought to the causes and consequences of the Spill and to the
policy and research issues it raises. In recent years, a number of the DAE
member (including those also belonging to the EEE) have been investigating
the impacts of environmental disasters in the short versus long run, the
effect of such shocks on the dynamics of regional growth, and the
historical evolution of the division-of-labor between public and voluntary
private relief responses. This appears an appropriate time to explore
collaboration between the two programs to stimulate research on the
long-term impacts of environmental disasters. Please let me know your
thoughts.

Sincerely,

Paul W. Rhode

NBER Research Associate

Hi Don,
The NSF recently issued the attached Dear Colleague letter expressing interest in funding research related to the Gulf Oil spill and other disasters. I thought the EEE members might be interested.
Thanks,
Alterra
