Dear Development Economics Program Members -

Duncan Thomas, the founding director of the NBER's DEV program, has
decided to step down from this role at the end of 2018.  He has served
in this role for over six years, and has been a truly outstanding
leader.  He has launched an incredibly successful program, and has
brought energy, enthusiasm for all facets of development economics, good
judgement, and terrific managerial skill to this task.  I hope that you
will save the evening of Friday November 30, the first day of the fall
DEV program meeting, for a dinner when we can collectively thank Duncan
for his extraordinary service to the development economics community.

Over the the next few months, I will reach out to many program members
to solicit advice on selecting the next program director.  I hope that
you will not hesitate to contact me and to share your views about what
has made Duncan's s leadership so successful, about important attributes
that the next DEV program director should have, and about significant
directions in research activity that may bear on the succession plan.  I
would also welcome your suggestions about candidates who might be well
suited to this role.

I look forward to your input, and hope to see many of you at the Summer
Institute next week.  All best wishes.

Jim Poterba
