Dear DEV program members

FALL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS 24 AUGUST
This is a reminder that Sunday 24 August is the deadline for submissions for
the Fall Development Program meeting which will be held in Cambridge, MA, on
October 10/11. If you have not already done so, I hope you will submit your
work:
       http://papers.nber.org/confsubmit/backend/cfp?id=DEVf14
Seema Jayachandran, Ben Olken and I will select the papers. Each presenter will
have an hour to present their work, taking questions from the audience during
the presentation. We will not have discussants at this program meeting.
If you have not already done so, please mark your calendar and I hope you
will attend the Fall meeting.

SUMMER INSTITUTE
Thanks to those of you who have given me your reactions to the 2015 Summer
Institute. Overall, the comments have been very positive and, by all accounts,
the meeting was very successful. Many, many thanks to those of you who
participated! There is not a consensus on whether to continue to have
discussants. The advantages of discussants were abundantly clear because the
discussants' presentations were of extremely high quality. (Thanks, again, for
doing a spectacular job!) The disadvantages -- primarily less interaction with
and comments from the audience -- were also clear. We will make a decision
about whether to have discussants at the 2015 Summer Institute later.

GRANT APPLICATIONS
If you are planning to submit a grant application, I encourage you to consider
submitting your application through the NBER. The NBER grants support services
are second to none. The January deadline for NSF applications to SBE is 18
January. Most regular NIH applications are due in the first half of October. If
you are planning to submit a new grant application, please contact Alterra
Milone (alterra_at_nber.org). If I can provide any assistance, please let me know.

BUILDING A LIBRARY OF DATA IN DEVELOPMENT
Ben Olken has suggested that if you are planning to purchase data for a
project, consider buying a site licence that will enable NBER affiliates to use
those data. I think this is a fantastic idea. In the past, Ben has purchased
data from Indonesia and various SUSENAS, SUPAS and PODES datasets are available
on the NBER server. Since site licences are often only marginally more
expensive than single licences, we can all benefit from building a shared
library of data in development that NBER members can use. Please let me know if
you have any ideas or if you are interested in purchasing data under a site
licence.

WORKING PAPERS
Many of the NBER working papers get a lot of attention. I encourage you to
submit your papers in development to the WP series. You can submit your paper
here: http://papers.nber.org/wpsubmit/eligibilitytosubmit.html

NEW DEV MEMBERS
Finally, I would like to welcome Suresh Naidu and Daniel Xu who have recently
joined the DEV program. They are both already members of other NBER programs
and I am delighted that they have joined DEV. Welcome!

As always, I appreciate feedback from you on how to make the NBER Development
Program more valuable. Please send me your comments and suggestions. Many
thanks!

Best wishes,
Duncan
