Hi,

We just learned that one of the NBER staff working at the main office in Cambridge tested positive for COVID-19 today, Wednesday April 20. This staff member developed symptoms last night, Tuesday, April 19. According to the CDC, an infected person can transmit the virus that causes COVID-19 as much as 48 hours before they have symptoms or before they were tested for asymptomatic cases.

Under current CDC definitions, you were not a close contact (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/determine-close-contacts.html) of the infected individual, since they were not in close contact with anyone within a two day window of the onset of symptoms, but I thought you would nevertheless want to know of this development.

Please call your health care provider or your local board of health with any questions. You can also find information on COVID-19, including symptoms, treatment, and a quarantine and isolation calculator on the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html. If you have additional questions please feel free to contact me at birnbaum_at_nber.org.

Thanks,
Diane
