Goldman is one of the founding editors of the Forum for Health Economics and Policy and has served on the editorial boards of Health Affairs, B.E. He is a health policy advisor to the Congressional Budget Office and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. He is also the 2009 recipient of the Eugene Garfield Economic Impact Prize, the MetLife Foundation's Silver Scholar Award, and AcademyHealth's Alice Hersh Award.

He received his B.A. summa cum laude from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. In his free time, Goldman enjoys getting lost in the Santa Monica mountains, 'geocaching' with his sons, and exploring the various coffee shops in Los Angeles.
