MEMORANDUM

TO: NBER Program on Technological Progress and Productivity Measurement
FROM: Ernst Berndt and Wesley Cohen
DATE: September 12, 2008
RE: Call for Papers

The Fall 2008 meeting of the NBER Program on Technological Progress
and Productivity Measurement will be held on Friday, December 5, 2008
at the Cambridge offices of the NBER. Wesley Cohen of Duke
University and I will co-organize the program. We invite you to
submit proposed papers addressing the themes of economic measures of
R&D, innovation and intangibles, and their impact on various measures
of economic performance. To make progress on the measurement of
innovation and intangibles and their economic impact, we believe
researchers will benefit from bridging across a variety of
perspectives, methods and data sources. Accordingly, we solicit
papers that span micro and macro economics, that reflect a diversity
of methods, and a range of micro and macro data sources involving
R&D, patents, copyrights, and different measures of innovation,
including survey data, patent data, other administrative data,
company financial data, and national income accounts.

Anyone interested in presenting a paper should send an abstract or,
preferably, a draft of the paper to Wes Cohen and me (contact
information is below) by Friday, October 10, 2008. Electronic
submissions in Word or PDF formats are encouraged. The program will
be finalized and the invitations will be distributed by Monday,
October 20, 2008. Final drafts of the papers are due to the NBER and
discussants by Monday, November 17, 2008. Also, if you are
particularly interested in serving as a discussant of a paper at
these meetings, let us know.

Although submissions from the NBER Productivity Program family
receive priority, if any of your colleagues have research that is
particularly appropriate for these meetings, please pass this
announcement on to them. Should you have any questions about the
program for this meeting, please contact us at:
