Dear Research Colleagues -

For the last four years, the NBER has been contracting with Moody’s to
purchase group access to ORBIS data, a comprehensive compendium of
information the balance sheets and ownership of several million firms in
more than 150 countries.  This initiative, launched by Pierre-Olivier
Gourinchas and Sebnem Kalemli-Ozcan, is currently directed by Galina
Hale.  A description of the current subscription may be found at

https://www.nber.org/research/orbis.

The group purchase provides a steep discount on access costs, along with
regular support and data-cleaning and conversion to Stata by NBER staff.

The subscription is renegotiated each year, and we hope to sign a new
contract for 2024 by early November.  To do this, we need to know by
early September how many researchers are interested in participating in
the group purchase.  Last year, the data cost for a research project,
which includes data access for one NBER affiliate (the PI) and that
affiliate's research assistants, was $12,000 - a small fraction of the
usual cost of ORBIS data.  The cost per project for the coming year will
depend on the number of subscribers.

If you are interested in participating in the group purchase, or have
questions, please contact Alterra Milone at alterra_at_nber.org and Galina
at gbhale_at_ucsc.edu.  Galina will be available to meet at Summer
Institute between July 10 and July 13 should you wish to discuss any
aspect of this consortium.

It is important for planning purposes to know who might be interested in
a data subscription for the coming year.  Please notify either Alterra
or Galina by Tuesday July 11 if you are potentially interested in
joining the consortium.

Thank you and all best wishes.

Jim Poterba
