Good morning,

I write on behalf of Galina Hale and Sebnem Kalemli-Ozcan. As you may
know, for the last three years NBER has been contracting with Bureau Van
Dijk, now part of Moody’s, for the group purchase of ORBIS data. The
description of the current subscription with all the details is at
http://data.nber.org/orbis4/ with an overview at
https://www2.nber.org/international-finance/ORBIS.pdf. Moody’s offers
us a huge discount on the data access, and provides regular support,
while NBER staff clean the data and convert it to Stata for easi(er)
use.

The subscription is on an annual basis and we are hoping to sign a new
contract with Moody’s for 2023 by early November. To do this, we need
to know how many people are interested in participating in the group
purchase by September. At current rates, each research project, which
includes access to the NBER member who is a PI and their research
assistants, costs $10,000 per researcher (future cost will depend on the
number of subscribers), which is a tiny fraction of the usual cost of
the ORBIS database.

The following papers have been published as NBER working papers as a
result of this partnership:

Galina Hale is taking over from Sebnem Kalemli-Ozcan, kalemli_at_umd.edu,
as an NBER-ORBIS coordinator, and I work with them on the administrative
aspects in my role as Director of Research and Grants Management. Our
account manager at Moody’s is Bailey Jensen Bailey.Jensen_at_moodys.com.
Bailey is also available to answer questions about the data.

If you are interested in participating in the group purchase, please
contact me or Galina at gbhale_at_ucsc.edu.

If you have any questions, you can contact me, Galina, or Sebnem. We
will all be in person at the Summer Institute and can schedule a meeting
then if needed. Bailey will also be available during the lunch break on
July 13 at the Royal Sonesta.

Best regards,

Alterra
