Dear NBER Board Members and Staff -

I am sorry to convey the news that Lawrence Klein, an emeritus member of
the NBER Board of Directors, passed away on Sunday in Gladwyne,
Pennsylvania, at the age of 93. He was elected to the board as an
at-large member in 1989, became an emeritus member in 1998, and remained
actively interested in the research activities at NBER.

Lawrence Klein was a path-breaking contributor to the development of
macro-econometric models and to the analysis of business cycle
fluctuations. In recognition of his research accomplishments, he was
honored with the John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic
Association in 1959, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in
1980.

Klein was born in 1920, studied as an undergraduate at the University of
California at Berkeley, and in 1944 became the first student to receive
a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT. In 1947, he joined the NBER staff in New
York as a full-time post-doctoral researcher, a position he held fro two
years. He subsequently taught at the University of Michigan, where he
developed the Klein-Goldberger model with graduate student Arthur
Goldberger, and at Oxford University. He returned to the United States
as a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania in 1958, where he
remained for the balance of his career. He was the Benjamin Franklin
Professor of Economics, emeritus, at the time of his death.

Lawrence Klein was a lifelong supporter of the NBER, and he will be
deeply missed.
