HRS 1996 Final Release version 3.0 files and supplemental files are now
available (see announcement below) and http://www.umich.edu/~hrswww/.

Effective May 15, 2001, HRS has a unified user registration system for all
Public data releases. Users who have registered under the
new system since January 1, 2001, and have a user id and password, are
already authorized under the new system. Users who
registered under the old system which did not provide a user id and password
will need to register to obtain these. Your
username/password combination must be used whenever you wish to download
data files.

To register, you must agree to the Conditions of Use governing access to Health and Retirement public release data. Users who register under the new system will receive authorization immediately via email.

Through your registration, we are able to convey to our sponsors the size
and diversity of our user community, allowing us to continue
to collect these important data. Registered users will receive user support,
as well as information related to errors in the data, future
releases, workshops, and publication lists. The information you provide will
not be for commerical use, and will not be redistributed to
third parties. For more information concerning privacy issues, please read

The release announcement:
HRS 1996 Final Core Data Release (Version 3)
May 15, 2001
The HRS 1996 Final Core Data Release (Version 3) is now available. All
sections and all variables of the core interview are included.
This release supersedes all earlier releases of this data.

Version 1 of the HRS 1996 Final Core Data Release included only sections CS,
A. B. F. J. N and R. Version 2 included all sections,
but did not include variables identified as "family variables," most of
which are located in Sections D and J. Version 3 includes all
sections and all variables.

As well as the familiar household-level and respondent-level files, the HRS
1996 Final Core Data Release, version 3, contains files at
five other levels -- household-member-and-child, sibling, helper,
transfer-to-child-or-grandchildren, and transfer-from-child. See the
data description for details.

In addition, a special file has been prepared with information about the
family respondent's parents merged onto the family respondent's
record, and about the family respondent's spouse's or partner's parents
merged onto the family respondent's spouse's or partner's
record. This file is available at our web site.

If you find any problems with the data, please report to us by email at our
help desk address, hrsquest@isr.umich.edu.
