Subject: Assistant Professor Position available, December 1 deadline

Dear Folks,

The Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics (ARE) at
the University of
California, Berkeley is conducting a search for an assistant professor
doing research related to the economics of global poverty (broadly
construed). I'm writing to ask your help in identifying suitable
candidates.

Our application deadline is this friday, December 1, and
applications can be received
by email at the following address: recruitment@are.berkeley.edu

ARE is generally regarded as the premier department of Agricultural
Economics in the U.S., and has been at the forefront of applied research
in development economics for decades. We have an large and active PhD
program consisting of around 60 students, of whom about a third are
pursuing development economics as their principal field. In the last
three years sixty percent of our PhD students have gone on to academic
positions, including placements at UC San Diego, UC Los Angeles,
Wisconsin, Columbia, Michigan, NYU, and John Hopkins.

The field of development economics at Berkeley is integrated across
the Department of Economics and ARE. Graduate courses are offered
jointly and taught by faculty from both departments, field exams
are jointly offered, and so on. The collective resources of the
two departments make for a great environment for doing research in
development.

Looking over recent issues of _Job Openings for Economists_, it
looks to me as though our position is one of the most attractive junior
development slots this year. I hope you'll agree, and encourage
your students to apply. We have very low teaching obligations,
significant research support, and a wonderful environment for
doing research on labor, trade, development, and poverty.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Ann Harrison

program, which typically involves teaching one undergraduate and one

possibility of summer research support. The successful candidate will
hold a faculty position in the University of California as well as an
appointment in the Agricultural Experiment Station. Applicant must
have a Ph.D. degree in agricultural economics, economics, or other
highly related field. Applications must be postmarked by December 1,
2006. Please submit a cover letter (including a statement of future
