Dear ITI group:

I am writing to keep you informed about
current and future activities in the
International Trade and Investment (ITI)
program. You should recently have received an
invitation to the spring meeting, which will
combine ITI with International Trade and
Organizations (ITO). The ITO working group is
headed by Gordon Hanson, and has had a few
previous meetings to explore issues dealing with
the organization of firms. It is common for
Bureau programs to have such working groups (e.g.
Public Economics has both Environmental Economics
and Behavioral Responses to Taxation as working
groups), which sometimes meet separately and
sometimes together. When meeting at the same
time, then everyone will be invited to both
meetings, as happened for the upcoming ITI/ITO
conference on March 31 – April 1.

The nominations for new Faculty Research
Fellows for the ITI program are completed for
this year, but for future years you can make
nominations by visiting the NBER website at

and submit information on candidates who you
think should be considered for program
affiliation. Most new program members join at
the FRF level, although it is also possible to
nominate potential Research Associates. You can
nominate candidates for membership in any
program, not just ITI. The deadline for FRF
nominations is January 31 of each year. In making
a nomination, please think about whether a
candidate would be an active member of the NBER
family – carrying out empirical research, coming
to program meetings, and periodically helping to
raise resources for NBER-based research
projects. You can find a complete list of who is already in the ITI group at:

Looking ahead, there are a number of
important dates for upcoming meetings of ITI and related activities:

March 31 – April 1, 2006: ITI/ITO conference in Cambridge

April 28 – 29, 2006: “International Service
Flows,” CRIW conference, Washington, D.C.
The Conference of Research on Income and Wealth
(CRIW) is a sister organization of the NBER, with
its membership drawn primarily from persons in
government agencies. You will recognize the CRIW
volumes by their orange rather than yellow covers
(e.g. “New Goods,” by Tim Bresnahan and Bob
Gordon, as well as earlier volumes by Bob Lipsey
and by Dave Richardson). The Bureau is
intentional about involving more academics within
CRIW activities, and while the Productivity group
has the greatest overlap with CRIW, there is
substantial interest among the ITI group, too.
The April 28 – 29 conference is being organized
by Matt Slaughter and Marshall Reinsdorf
(BEA). While the agenda has been finalized,
there is always room for additional discussants
and attendees. Please let me know if you would
like to participate in this or other CRIW conferences.

May 19 – 20, 2006: University Research
Conference (URC) in Cambridge. This is a special
NBER meeting. Each year, two programs are invited
to organize open-access conferences that are
designed to highlight current research in their
field. This year, ITI as well as Public Economics
are arranging the meetings. The conference is
open to non-NBER affiliates, and the program
includes a mix of researchers with, and without,
NBER affiliations. Attendance at such meetings is
typically significantly higher than that at
program meetings, since invitations are sent to
the department chairs at a long list of economics
departments requesting “nominations” of faculty
members who would be interested in
attending. The last URC of the ITI group was
organized by Bruce Blonigen in 2002, and this
year Andrew Bernard and Marc Melitz will be
organizing the meeting under the title “Firms and
the Evolving Structure of Global Economic
Activity.” A call for papers went out in
November, and I hope that you will try to attend.

July 31 – August 3, 2006: Summer Institute .
This is being organized by David Weinstein and
Don Davis, and you can submit papers or abstracts to them until March 31.

December 1–2, 2006: Winter Meeting in Palo Alto. I will likely organize that.

March 30–31, 2007: Spring meeting in Cambridge – please mark your calendars!

July 30 – August 2, 2007: Summer Institute. This
will be organized by Don Davis and a second person.

I hope that all is well, and look forward to seeing you in March.

Rob
