NBER IO Program Transition

Dear IO Program Members -

I am writing to let you know that I have accepted an invitation to
become the next Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Economic Analysis
in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, succeeding Aviv
Nevo, who will be returning to Northwestern (and from leave at the NBER)
after his distinguished service in this role. While in DC, I will be on
leave from MIT and the NBER.

It has been my enormous privilege to serve as the IO program director,
and to work with all of you over the years. During my tenure, the NBER
IO program has expanded from roughly two dozen members to over 75
members, with the bulk of that growth from adding recent Ph.D.s to the
rolls. As the IO field has evolved, I am pleased that the NBER has
played an important role in providing a forum for the best new work in
the field across a broad span of questions, methods, and industry
settings. It has been exciting for me to be at the helm of that
activity. Rather than suggesting an interim program director during
my absence, however, this seems a good time to initiate a leadership
transition for the IO program. I've told Jim Poterba that I plan to
resign from my program directorship before joining the DoJ in early
September.

In the meantime, I am preparing my report on the IO program to the NBER
Board of Directors at its September meeting. If you have work that
you've been planning to get into the Working Paper series, now would be
a good time to submit it. (Submission information is at:
http://www.nber.org/forms/pdf.html) As a heads-up, the upcoming Winter
program meeting will be joint with the Insurance Working Group, at
Stanford on February 20-21 2015 (the Insurance meeting will start on
Thursday, February 19).

Thank you for all your support of the IO program.

Nancy
