Updates and input needed for the NBER IO program

Dear IO Program family members:

Three quick updates/input requests:
1. _Dates for the Winter IO program meetings_: Please indicate your
preferences for dates at the link below. I will merge that information
with space availability on the west coast and publish the winter program
meeting dates as soon as possible.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dC0tc1owSEp0MmE4NWJ1MDYzWVAyZVE6MQ

2. _Research activity_: I've been asked to write an article for the
winter issue of the NBER Reporter on the activities of the IO program,
which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary as an NBER program. This
provides a chance to showcase the recent work of NBER family members
working in the IO area--that means yours! But only if you're putting
your work into the Working Paper series. _Please read the message below_
for action I may need from you within the next two weeks.

3. _A heads up on scheduling for the 2012 Summer Institute_. The IO SI
program meeting will return to its historic position in week 2 of the
NBER Summer Institute, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 20 -21.
We'll be experimenting with some format changes that I'll circulate in a
separate email later this fall. The schedule is designed to facilitate
coordination with:

  * The 2012 NBER Summer Institute Econometrics Methods lectures, which
will be given by our own Ariel Pakes and Aviv Nevo on Wednesday and
    Thursday, July 18-19
  * The Digitization meetings run by Susan Athey, Erik Brynjolfsson, and
Hal Varian (most likely Thursday and Friday of that week)
  * The Environmental and Energy Economics meetings on Monday and
    Tuesday, July 23-24

Please save the dates!

Best,

Nancy Rose

*NBER REPORTER ARTICLE ON THE IO PROGRAM:
********************************************
*For a sense of what Reporter articles are like, you can see the last IO
report, written in 2006, at:

http://www.nber.org/programs/io/io.html

Working papers are one of the primary metrics of program activity, as
well as an important way for you to show that you value your NBER
affiliation. My Reporter article will focus on research by IO program
members that has appeared or scheduled to appear in the Working Paper
series. I will try to discuss a set of very broad themes, ideally not
overlapping substantially with other programs, and won't be able to
mention every paper. But if your research is not in the WP series, no
matter how wonderful it is, it definitely won't show up in the Reporter.

To ensure that the report is up to date, I would ask those of you with
*working papers* that you have submitted but that have not yet come out
as an NBER WP to send me the abstract and date submitted.

If you have *current work* that you have not yet submitted to the NBER
Working Paper series, please do so /now/, and send me the abstract when
you submit it to the series. It probably needs to go in within the next
10 days to be included in the Reporter article. You can get the details
on how to submit a paper to the series at the link below. If you run
into problems, email Laura Bethard for help: bethardl_at_nber.org
<mailto:bethardl_at_nber.org>

     http://www.nber.org/forms/submit.html

Some of you seem uncertain as to the appropriate moment to submit work
to the WP series. /Please/ don't wait for acceptance at a journal. If
you have research in a department series, or posted on your website, or
distributed at program meetings or seminars that you've given, then it's
ready for the NBER Working Paper series. It's for /working papers/, not
pre-prints of accepted articles. And remember: you can update working
papers when you later revise them by submitting the new version to the
NBER. This will replace the original online version when received by
the publication department. So, send in your existing papers as soon as
possible! Continue to send in research as it reaches WP stage. This is
important to the program and to the NBER.
