City University of New York Graduate Center President Bill Kelly has informed Jim Poterba and me that the Bureau will have to leave the Altman Building when its current lease arrangement with the Graduate Center ends on August 31, 2013. I want to assure you that Jim and I have made every effort to make sure that Bill is aware of the very substantial benefits that the Graduate Center in general and the CUNY Ph.D. Program in Economics in particular have derived from the presence of the Bureau in the Altman building since the Graduate Center moved there in the fall of 1999. He is aware of these benefits, but the Graduate Center simply needs more space to fulfill its long-term goals. Further attempts to persuade Bill to change his mind will not be successful.

On a positive note, Jim is committed to maintaining an NBER office in New York City. Therefore, in the coming months, we will be searching for new office space in Manhattan.
