Each year I receive requests to invite people who are not members of the NBER Health Economics Program and typically not members of other NBER programs to attend the Health Economics Program Workshop at the Summer Institute. Most of the requests are generated by Jim Poterba's call for nominations of Ph.D. candidates to attend. Many times, I receive requests in late June or early July. Rob Shannon, a member of the staff of the NBER Conference Department, has informed me that these late requests cause problems for his department, which is very busy with issues related to the SI starting in May. Rob has asked me to inform you that requests for invitations must be received by May 25. I already have received requests for Ph.D. candidates to attend the SI from John Cawley (Cornell), Sara Markowitz (Emory), and Shin-Yi Chou (Lehigh) and have invited their students. I also have invited a number of Ph.D. candidates from the City University of New York Graduate Center, where I teach.
