Dear NBER Researchers and Staff Members -

I am sorry to convey the news that Michael Mussa, an NBER Research
Associate in the International Finance and Macroeconomics program,
passed away late Sunday evening at the age of 67. Mike was an
undergraduate at UCLA, and he received his Ph.D. at the University of
Chicago. He began his career at the University of Rochester, and then
returned to Chicago to join the faculty at the Graduate School of
Business in 1976. Mike was a leading figure in the analysis of balance
of payments and exchange rate determination. He was appointed an NBER
research associate in 1981, and he participated in many NBER projects
and meetings.

Mike served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers between 1986
and 1988, and as the Economic Counselor and Director of Research at the
IMF from 1991-2001. He was an active contributor to both the research
and public policy communities, and he will be deeply missed.
