Dear NBER Family, Board, and Staff Members -
I hope that you will join me in congratulating Emmanuel Saez, who
the American Economic Association named last Friday as this year's
recipient of the John Bates Clark medal. The prize citation identifies
Emmanuel's work on optimal tax theory, behavioral responses to taxation,
the distribution of income, and the analysis of retirement plans as the
basis for this award. Emmanuel is a faculty member at the University of
California - Berkeley, and a Research Associate in the NBER Public
Economics Program. He joined the NBER as a Faculty Research Fellow in 1999.
