Dear Research Colleagues -

I am writing, belatedly, to share the news that Bennett McCallum, an
influential monetary economist and a research associate in the NBER
Economic Fluctuations and Growth and Monetary Economics programs, passed
away in late December.  McCallum was the H.J. Heinz Professor of
Economics, emeritus, at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie
Mellon.   at the time of his death.  Before joining the CMU faculty in
1981, he taught at the University of Sussex and and University of Virginia.

McCallum's most influential research explored the macroeconomic effects
of various monetary policy rules, and his work affected policy practice
as well as the direction of academic research.  He also made important
contributions to the analysis of central bank independence, the
political business cycle, and long-run fiscal policy.  A description of
his research and other accomplishments may be found here:

McCallum received three degrees -- a BA, a BS (in chemical engineering),
and a PhD from Rice University, as well as an MBA from the Harvard
Business School.  As an active contributor to the NBER and many other
research communities, he will be deeply missed.
