Dear Research Colleagues -

I am sorry to share the news that Ed Prescott, a pioneer in
macroeconomics who was a research associate in the NBER Economic
Fluctuations and Growth program for more than thirty years, passed away
yesterday.  He was Regent's Professor at the W.P. Carey School of
Business at Arizona State University. Over the course of his career, he
was also a faculty member at Carnegie-Mellon, Chicago, Minnesota, and
the University of Pennsylvania.

Prescott's research ranged widely in macroeconomics, and most notably
included the study of business cycle fluctuations, time inconsistency
problems, investment behavior, and the equity premium puzzle.

Prescott received his undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College, a
master's degree in operations reserach from Case Western Reserve
University, and his Ph.D. in Economics from Carnegie-Mellon University.
In 2004, he shared the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2004 with
Finn Kydland.  He was an active contributor to the NBER and many other
research communities, and he will be deeply missed.
