Dear Research Colleagues -

I am very sorry to share the news that Emmanuel Farhi, an active member
of four NBER programs -- Economic Fluctuations, International Finance &
Macro, Monetary Economics, and Public Economics -- passed away
unexpectedly on Thursday.  He was the Robert C. Waggoner Professor of
Economics at Harvard, where he joined the faculty in 2006 and spent his
whole career.

Farhi was a wide-ranging and very productive scholar who made important
contributions to international finance, the analysis of financial
crises, productivity, optimal tax theory,  and a number of other
topics.  He had been honored with the Banque de France / Toulouse School
of Economics Prize in Macroeconomics and Finance as well as a number of
other awards.

Farhi, who graduated from the Ecole Normale Superieure and the Corps des
Mines in France and received his Ph.D. from MIT, advanced our
understanding of a number of central issues in macroeconomics and
related fields.  He will be deeply missed.
