NBER affiliate nominations

Hi Everyone-

I trust you all received the email from Denis Healy soliciting nominations
for faculty research fellows and RAs. Following the DEV group's lead (and
with thanks to Seema Jayachandran and Ben Olken for agreeing to share their
language and Kelsey Jack for passing it on), here are a couple notes on the
process.

First, in terms of who can be nominated: there is no hard and fast rule,
beyond the fact that they must have a tenure-track position at a North
American university, which is an NBER requirement. The selection process is
very competitive, since in a typical year, the program is only able to add
about three new affiliates. We are looking for outstanding economists who
work on energy and the environment, and we use people's CVs and papers as
the primary way of evaluating researchers. If relevant, we also consider
nominees' recent presentations at NBER conferences. With that in mind, as a
general guide, almost all of the new Faculty Research Fellows in EEE in the
past few years have had at least 1 or more R&R and/or top publication,
though this is also not a hard and fast rule and we look at the entirety of
nominees' CVs. The NBER is also looking to ensure diversity in all its
programs in a wide variety of respects, so please keep this in mind as well.

Second, we wanted to flag that there is no need to write detailed
nomination statements, nor is it advantageous to a candidate to be
nominated by more than 1 person. The EEE Steering Committee (which has
rotating membership, but is currently Chris Knittel, Matt Kotchen, Meredith
Fowlie, Michael Greenstone and Wolfram Schlenker) reviews the CVs of all
the nominated candidates without regard to who nominated someone or how
many nominations they received.

Finally, if there is someone who is currently an NBER affiliate in a
different program whom you think would be a great fit for EEE, please
nominate them, too. We consider these 'cross-lists' at the same time,
though they are in a different bucket from new NBER nominees.

Nominations can be submitted here:
http://back.nber.org/nominate/backend/form?confid=N_F21. The deadline
is *February
8*.

Take care,
Catherine
