Dear Education Program members,

I am writing with a few reminders.

1. At our upcoming program meeting (5/11/12), we will have a
discussion with people from the Institute for Education Sciences, the
National Center for Education Statistics, and the National Center for
Analysis of Postsecondary Education and Employment. This is your
opportunity to discuss their funding priorities, researchers' access
to important data like financial aid data, and so on. I think that we
will all benefit from the exchange, so do not miss it. The program is
at http://www.nber.org/confer/2012/CHEDs12/program.htm

2. You will have received a note from Jim Poterba today about
nominating students for Summer Institute. Please do this! We would
like to ensure that students from every PhD program have an equal
opportunity to see the SI programs, but space is limited so send your
nominations by 5/9/12. If you are nominating a student for other
programs in addition to Education, please let me know so that I can
coordinate with the other Program Director. The nomination does not
need to be long, but it is helpful to know how far along in the
program the student is, what the student is working on (in a
nutshell), and --crucially-- the student's contact information so that
the conference department and I do not have to hunt for it later. If
the student has a c.v. readily available, please attach it to your
nomination. I am also always delighted to read a student's paper that
is attached to a nomination, but this definitely not necessary!

3. The deadline for regular NSF grants is mid August, so start
planning now. I am delighted to discuss your grant ideas, and Alterra
Milone (alterra_at_nber.org) can provide you with all kinds of logistical
information. Always remember that when you run your grant through the
NBER, you get a marvelously streamlined process AND your overhead gets
"plowed back" into economic research.

4. I will be writing to untenured members of the program who might be
interested in applying for the special NSF CAREER grants. These
five-year awards have an unusually early deadline: July 25. So, if
you know of someone who should apply, please make them aware of this
now. I would be glad to help with these proposals, and I need your
help to ensure that no one who would be a good applicant misses out!

All good wishes,

Caroline
