Dear NBER Economics of Education program members,

As you know, the NBER Summer Institute can be a great experience for a
graduate student who wants to learn the new papers, hear about the latest
methods, and get exposed to lively discussion. In the past, some of you
have informally asked to bring a graduate student with you for a day or two.
This summer, the NBER is trying an experiment and allowing each program to
nominate 10 graduate students from outside the Boston area to receve an
invitation to attend Summer Institute.

If you have a graduate students whom you would like to nominate, could you
please send me his or her contact information, a short description of her or
her research interests, and any comments you wish to add. If the graduate
student is close the job market, feel free to send a job market abstract or
paper, but keep in the mind that the opportunity is not restricted
to students who are close to the market.

Although the NBER will be able to provide a graduate student participants
with coffee, continental breakfast, lunch, and group dinners, it will be
unable to pay for their travel to Cambridge or their hotel expenses. Please
ensure, when you nominate someone, that travel and hotel expenses can be
managed. Many universities and fellowships have travel funds to cover the
expenses of graduate students who are formally invited to a conference.

Keep in mind that this nomination process applies only to graduate students
outside the local area. Please send your nominations to me as soon as
possible and certainly within the next two weeks.

Regards, Caroline Hoxby

p.s. Paying for the conference costs of graduate students and young scholars
is just one
of the things the NBER does with the overhead that comes from NSF and other
grants. This overhead is very efficiently plowed back into economics.
Please keep this in mind when you are applying for grants. Also be mindful
of the incredibly efficient NBER grant staff, who can help you manage every
aspect of the application and grant management process.
