Dear Development Economics Program Affiliates -

I am sorry to share the news that Martin Ravallion, a research associate
in the NBER Development Economics program and the former director of the
Development Research Group and acting Chief Economist at the World Bank,
passed away on Saturday, December 24.  He was the Edmond D. Villani
Professor of Economics at Georgetown University.

Ravallion was a leader in the measurement and international comparison
of poverty rates, and in the design of policies to alleviate poverty.
His contributions were widely recognized, for example with the 2015 BBVA
Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Development Cooperation.

Ravallion received his undergraduate degree from the University of
Sydney and his Ph.D. at the London School of Economics.  He was an
active contributor to the NBER and to many other research communities,
including the Bureau for Research in Economic Analysis and Development
(BREAD), where he was a senior fellow.  He will be deeply missed.
