CPS Basic Data 1976 - 1999

The NBER now has a complete set of Current Population Survey Basic Data
from 1976 to 1999. This includes every household in the CPS for every
month but it does not include the questions asked only in the supplements
(such as the March Annual Demographic Supplement). It does include some
demographic information and the labor force status and search questions.
Documentation is available online.

There are 42,181,786 observations in 288 monthly files. Because of the
large size of the complete collection, we would prefer that you not
download large fractions over the web. We can supply you with a shell
account on the NBER Sparc cluster or a tape copy (AIT-1) upon request.

The files are in ASCII format and were compressed using the unix gzip
command. Your web browser may be set to unzip *.gz files automatically.
A program to unzip the files on a PC is available with the data.

The NBER also has a large collection of CPS suppplements available and
will acquire more upon request. All our CPS files come directly from the
BLS, Census, or the National Archives and include files not available
through the ICPSR.

I am available for consultations via email, in person and on the
telephone.
