Dear NBER Board Members, Researchers, and Staff Members -
I hope that you will join me in congratulating five NBER researchers who
today were honored by the American Economic Association.
Dave Donaldson of Stanford University has been named this year's winner
of the John Bates Clark Medal. Dave has made important contributions in
international trade, development economics, and economic geography. The
prize citation highlights his "distinctive style of research, based on
important conceptual questions, careful data work and credible
identification combined with state-of-the-art structural methods."
Dave's work has yielded important new evidence on the efficiency gains
and welfare effects of both international and intra-national trade. He
has also developed insightful tests of the theory of comparative
advantage and other central propositions in trade theory. Dave is "the
most exciting economist in the area of empirical trade." He is a
Research Associate in three NBER programs: Development, Development of
the American Economy, and International Trade and Investment.
The AEA also named four new Distinguished Fellows: James Heckman, the
Henry Schultz Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the
University of Chicago; Charles Manski, the Board of Trustees Professor
of Economics at Northwestern University; Robert Pollak, the Hernreich
Distinguished Professor of Economics at Washington University in St.
Louis; and Nancy Stokey, the Frederick Henry Prince Distinguished
Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. All four
are NBER Research Associates.
