Dear NBER Researchers -

I am writing with some information to facilitate your planning for
the 2013 Summer Institute -- now only five months away -- and with some
other NBER news.

Summer Institute

The 2013 Summer Institute is scheduled for July 8-July 26. A
detailed meeting schedule is available at:

http://nber.org/confer/2013/SI%202013/SI2013.html

I would like to call your attention to three events:

     * On Wednesday, July 10, we will host a symposium on "The First 100
Years of the Federal Reserve." This event, organized by Anil Kashyap of
the University of Chicago, and Christina Romer and David Romer of the
University of California at Berkeley, will be structured around a number
of panel discussions that will involve both researchers and former
policy makers.

     * On Monday and Tuesday, July 15-16, the Econometrics Methods
Lectures will focus on "Econometric Methods for Large Data Sets." A
team of five lecturers -- Victor Chernozhukov of MIT, and Matthew
Gentzkow, Christian Hansen, Jesse Shapiro, and Matt Taddy, all of the
University of Chicago, will introduce methods for statistical analysis
of very large data sets and present a number of applications.

     * On Wednesday, July 24, Lawrence Summers of Harvard University
will deliver the 2013 Martin Feldstein Lecture. He will speak on "New
Policies for a New Economy."

Memorial for Anna Schwartz

On Sunday, April 21, the NBER will host a memorial program in New
York City for Anna Schwartz, whose career as an NBER researcher spanned
nearly seven decades. This will be at the Sofitel Hotel, beginning at
12:30pm. If you are interested in attending, please contact Marinella
Moscheni (mmoscheni_at_gc.cuny.edu).

NBER Program and Working Group Leadership Changes

Robert Hall of Stanford, the founding director of the Economic
Fluctuations and Growth Program, will step down from this role at the
end of the current academic year. Everyone affiliated with the NBER
owes Bob a debt of gratitude for the role he has played at the Bureau
over the last three decades. I am very pleased that Mark Gertler of
NYU, and Peter Klenow of Stanford, have agreed to serve as co-directors
of the EFG program beginning this summer.

Nicholas Souleles of the University of Pennsylvania stepped down as
a co-leader of the Household Finance Working Group at the start of
2013. Stephen Zeldes of Columbia has joined Brigitte Madrian of Harvard
in the role of co-director.

Nominating New NBER Affiliates

Tomorrow (February 6) is the closing date for nominating potential
new Faculty Research Fellows and Research Associates. If you have a
candidate to propose, please send a c.v. and a brief nominating
statement to Denis Healy (dhealy_at_nber.org).

Thank you, as always for your support of the NBER. All best wishes
for the spring semester.; I look forward to seeing you this summer if
not before.
