Dear colleagues,

As I mentioned during the March Staff Meeting, this month we are launching
VPN with Two Factor Authentication (2FA), which is a requirement per our
cybersecurity insurance for accessing Bureau computers and servers from
remote locations. VPN with 2FA provides an extra layer of security to
protect the NBER network and data. We would appreciate if you can begin
using VPN no later than March 24, 2023. VPN will be required later this
spring for remote access to your office computer and will be introduced to
researchers soon for connecting to servers (e.g. nber1-9). We appreciate
your feedback on the instructions and experience. Please contact
it-support_at_nber.org for help with any of these steps.

VPN will replace the tunnel (e.g. via Putty) that you currently use as a
first step before connecting to your desktop computer at 1050. Please note
the following instructions:

   -

We strongly recommend you add a second device or “factor” for 2FA so you
are not left without a backup to connect to your office computer. Options
for consideration are in the updated Duo documentation
   <https://www.nber.org/technology-support/duo-first-time-instructions>.
IT Staff can also generate a one-time bypass code for you in an emergency.
   -

New instructions for Remote Desktop with VPN are available for both home
   PCs
   <https://www.nber.org/technology-support/how-remote-desktop-your-nber-pc-windows>
   and home Macs
   <https://www.nber.org/technology-support/how-remote-desktop-your-nber-pc-mac>.
This documentation is also accessible from our general Technology Support
   <https://www.nber.org/technology-support> page linked in MyNBER.

Thank you in advance!

Best regards,

Erin Richardson
