Holiday Schedule for 2014

Dear Colleagues -

Last week, Gerri circulated the holiday schedule for 2014. There is one
important change that I wanted to call to your attention. As we
discussed at our recent staff meeting, Christmas falls on a Thursday
next year. This raises the question of whether to close our office on
Friday December 26 and to make that an NBER holiday. We collected votes
at our recent meeting on whether or not to close on December 26, and if
so, whether to keep the office open on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, or
Columbus Day, in 2014. The ballot results showed strong support for
closing on December 26, and more support for working on Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day than for opening the office on Columbus Day.

In 2014, therefore,in a break from our past tradition, the NBER office
will be OPEN on Monday January 20 (MLK Day) and we will be CLOSED on
December 26. I appreciate the input that I received on making this
change from our recent holiday calendar.

I look forward to seeing you at the Ice Cream Social on Wednesday.

Jim
