From kgarber@aha.org Wed Jan 13 15:32:06 2021 Date: Wed, 13 Jan 2021 20:31:59 +0000 From: "Garber, Kim" To: Daniel Feenberg Subject: FW: NBER CUSTOMER - question about GPO data Here is the response to your question for Haizhen Lin. RESPONSE OF OUR DIRECTOR OF DATA QUALITY "We do have spaces [on the survey instrument to write-in 3 GPOs] but we only publish the primary one on the public file. The fill rates are quite low for the second two spaces. In the example below, the hospital reported Premier as the main GPO so that is what we used in the public file." She also said, "In 2008 I suspect that is how the hospital reported - with a slash. #2 below is more accurate - the hospital reported Premier as the primary and GNYHA on the second line." NBER'S QUESTION: This is the survey questions that I found; I was thinking that there might be multiple GPOs for a given hospital but the data that we have seems only report one single GPO. And for some GPO names, I see things like GNYHA/Premier. I am not sure how to interpret this. [IMAGE] To give you an example, Staten Island University Hosp, Richmond, NY (id: 6214735). According to the "gponame" column, the hospital used Premier in 2003 and 2005, GNYHA in 2006 and 2007, GNYHA/Premier in 2008, GNYHA again during 2009-2011 and Premier ever since. Which of the following is true: (1) the hospital was using either GNYHA or Premier for a given year, or (2) the hospital has been using both GNYHA and Premier but the data just reports one of them for the most part?
