X-Windows Servers for Desktop ComputersNote Xming is called a server because it carries out the instructions of the program running on the remote computer. I agree this is confusing. Apple OS-XMac OX-X users can install X-windows from the OS disk. Once installed open a terminal window and log onto a server: ssh -X -Y userid@nber8.nber.orgto execute any X-Windows program on our nber8 compute server. 3, 7 and 9 should also work. WindowsLuckily there is now a server that installs and runs easily on Windows XP. You have to download and install ssh also to get past our (and your) firewall. ssh and the Xming X-Windows server are available directly from the NBER website:
Different ssh clients will have slightly different ways of turning on X-11 forwarding. For TerraTermSSH this is done on the setup|forwardingmenu. Remember to save the setup (also on the setup menu) or it won't take effect. For Secure-CRT X-11 forwarding can be turned on by checking the x11 box on the options|global-options|X11 page. Again, remember to save. To run the server, go to start|programs|Xlaunchand accept all defaults. Once the xserver is launched, then login to any unix system using your ssh client. Any X-windows program such as xstata will open windows on your monitor when run. The X-server will run till you reboot, but it only accepts display instructions from the machine you have logged into with the ssh client. Vista machines at 1050Any Vista machines distributed at 1050 will have Xming start up by default at boot, and have port forwarding turned on for Teraterm. More information about Xming is available at Straightrunning
