----------------------------------------------------------- QUICK INSTALLATION GUIDE HDD Sheriff PCI for Windows 98 V5.6.3 Overview: The following procedure is a typical installation and suits the needs for most users of the HDD Sheriff. The procedure assumes you have a fully functioning PC with the operating system installed and configured on a single hard drive with one partition, C:\. When the steps are completed, the PC will be configured with the HDD Sheriff in Auto Protection Mode and a partition configuration as follows: C:\ Drive with operating system Protected D:\ Drive for data, 200MB Not Protected Default 500 buffer space If the hard drive has been partitioned with a C: and D: drive before the Sheriff was installed, the C: drive will be protected and the D: drive will be designated as the data drive, not protected. When the HDD-Sheriff is successfully installed and the PC is rebooted, the following will appear just before the Microsoft Windows splash screen: HDD Sheriff - -> Protection Mode... Before you begin: I. Make sure the operating system is fully installed and functioning on the target PC. 2. Defragment the hard drive by running the defragment utility. This will expedite installation and prevent file fragmentation errors. Change CMOS settings: 1. Disable Anti-Virus Protection in the BIOS, if any. 2. Disable Memory Shadow Option, if any. PCI HDD Sheriff Installation Procedure for Windows 98 V 5.6.3: 1. With the computer turned off, install the HDD Sheriff PCI card. 2. Turn on the computer and the New Hardware Wizard from Windows 98 will find the PCI flash card. Click NEXT. 3. Insert the HDD Sheriff setup disk and click on NEXT, on the following screen click NEXT again. After computer had found the file sheriff.inf click NEXT. In the window "Add new Hardware Wizard" click NEXT. When the computer says "Windows has finished installing the software..."click FINISH. 4. When asked to reboot the computer, remove the floppy disk and click YES. 5. After Windows loads, insert the HDD Sheriff Setup disk. 6. Click the START button, select RUN, and type a:\setup.exe then click OK. 7. Select NEXT at the "Setup" window. 8. Click the Program check button. Click NEXT if the program check says that no other programs are running (the NEXT button should be active). 9. Click YES at the "License Agreement". 10. On the "Choose Destination Directory" window click NEXT. 11. Choose the "Typical setup" and NEXT. 12. On the "Data Partition" window, click "Create Unprotected Data Partition" button. 13. On "Drive Device Screen" highlight the new drive labeled "DATA 200MB" by clicking on it. 14. Click "Modify" button. 15. On "Modify a Drive" screen, click OK. 16. Click NEXT. 17. Create a Supervisors Password and click NEXT. 18. When prompted, click OK to restart the computer. DO NOT remove the diskette. 19. At the "Option 2" window click NEXT. 20. Click NEXT at the "Folder selection" screen. 21. After Defragmentation is complete press any key, remove the setup diskette and press any key to restart the computer. 22. Computer will reboot from the diskette. 23. When the computer reboots, it will load the remaining necessary files. 24. The computer will continue to boot to Windows in Protection Mode. 25. After Defragmentation is complete press any key, remove the diskette and press any key to restart the computer. 26. The computer will now boot to Windows. 27. The HDD Sheriff installation is complete. TEST THE HDD SHERIFF INSTALLATION 1. Boot the computer into "Protection Mode". This can be verified by selecting START\ PROGRAMS\JUNGSOFT\HDD SHERIFF. A small star will be placed in the system tray at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. If the star is blue, the system is in protection mode. 2. Make a change to the system such as changing the desktop background or creating a new folder on the desktop. 3. Reboot the computer. After Windows Loads, the desktop should be returned to its original settings and the new folder should be gone. The HDD Sheriff is now protecting the system. 4/20/2002
