This CD-ROM contains the Natality Detail public use files for 2001. The data files are in ASCII format and the United States file has been zipped . The United States file is named Nat01us.zip while the Territories file is named Nat01pb.ps. Documentation files may be found in the folder Doc and comprise the following: Intro - Introduction, file characteristics, and record layout USGeo - Geographic Code Outline for the United States USPMSA - List of Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas and their Component Counties for the United States PRPMSA - List of Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas and their Component Counties for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands Nvsr 51_02 - Births: Final Data for 2001 Techapp - Natality, 2001 Technical Appendix The last two files are in Adobe Acrobat. All the others are in Word Perfect. NOTE: Populations published in the Technical Notes section of "Births: Final Data for 2001" and the Technical Appendix, 2001, Natality, are based on the 1990 U.S. census because detailed populations based on the 2000 census were not available when these reports and the CD-ROM were prepared. As a result, rates are generally larger than would be the case if 2000-based estimates were used. The magnitude of the overestimate varies by population group. Revised rates based on the 2000 census will be presented in a forthcoming report and released on CD- ROM. WARNING! DATA USE RESTRICTIONS Read Carefully Before Using The Public Health Service Act (Section 308) (d) provides that the data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), may be used only for the purpose of health statistical reporting and analysis. Any effort to determine the identity of any reported case is prohibited by this law. NCHS does all it can to assure that the identity of data subjects cannot be disclosed. All direct identifiers, as well as any characteristics that might lead to identification, are omitted from these datasets. Any intentional identification or disclosure of a person or establishment violates the assurances of confidentiality given to the providers of the information. Therefore, users will: 1. Use the data in these datasets for statistical reporting and analysis only. 2. Make no use of the identity of any person or establishment discovered inadvertently and advise the Director, NCHS, of any such discovery. 3. Not link these datasets with individually identifiable data from other NCHS or non-NCHS datasets.
