DATA COLLECTION DESCRIPTION United States Department of Health and Human Services. National Center for Health Statistics NATALITY DETAIL FILE, 1969: [UNITED STATES] (ICPSR 3242) SUMMARY: This collection provides information on live births in the United States during calendar year 1969. The natality data in this file are a component of the vital statistics collection effort maintained by the federal government. Geographic variables of residence for births include the state, county, city, county and city population, standard metropolitan statistical area (SMSA), and metropolitan/nonmetropolitan county. Other variables specify the race and sex of the child, the age of the mother, place of delivery, person in attendance, and live-birth order. The natality tabulations in the documentation include live births by age of mother, live-birth order, and race of child; live births by marital status of mother, age of mother, and race of child; and live births by attendant and place of delivery. UNIVERSE: Live births in the United States during calendar year 1969. SAMPLING: Fifty percent of birth certificates for calendar year 1969. NOTE: (1) This collection has not been processed by ICPSR staff. ICPSR is distributing the data and documentation for this collection in essentially the same form in which they were received. When appropriate, documentation has been converted to Portable Document Format (PDF), data files have been converted to non-platform-specific formats, and variables have been recoded to ensure respondents' anonymity. (2) Per agreement with NCHS, ICPSR distributes the data file(s) and text of the technical documentation for this collection as prepared by NCHS. (3) The codebook is provided by the principal investigator as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site. RESTRICTIONS: In preparing the data file(s) for this collection, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution NCHS requires, under Section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 242m), that data collected by NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions. Beginning in 1970, resident natality data refer to births occurring to residents of the United Stat,%@'on~y. Tables by place of occurrence include births to nonresident aliens, so totals will differ slightly from resident tables, . If your tabulations differ from our published figures, different handling of nonresident aliens may be responsible. Codes 52 through 59 in positions 13-14 of the detail natalitj; record can be used to identify nonresident aliens. l/25 -- --._ DDP - PB . 1969 - 1971 PTATALITY PROCESSING Outline of Items and Codes Arranned by Location in the Final Detail BIRTH Tape Record GENERAL: 1.1 - This outline of items and Codes relates to the final Edit and Recoded Detail Birth Records produced in the edit run of the N8tnlity process- ing.
