Introduction to the NBER Extension to the Mare-Winship Data This file contains the documentation for the origianl Mare-Winship CPS extracts (covering 1964-1988) and the extension to 1993 done by Christine Collins at the NBER during the spring of 1996. While most of the documentation is copied directly from the Mare-Winship documentation, changes were made to reflect necessary changes in the meanings of codes. We have tried to keep to the spirit of the of the Mare-Winship project and have not done extensive recoding. For many of the variables, the coding did not change from the 1964-88 codes to the 1989+ codes. However, there were several variables that did have to be documented for changes in coding. Where applicable, these changes are listed next to the old codes. When going through the data, we did not find the location of several of the variables in the CPS Data Dictionary. These variables were: x62 Normal Full Time Job x101-x102 Family [A/P] Weight x109-x113 Type [A-E] Income x114 Dividends and Interest Two variables (x75 and x95) were constrained by single character output fields. For these variables, two-digit values were recoded to 0. For x75 (Relationship to household head) some information was lost. (*NOTE: Data could be found for variables measuring income from dividends, rents and trusts; dividends; interest, dividends and net rentals; and rent. There was not enough information available to generate the data measuring dividends and interest alone.) All variables that could not be found for the time series 1989-1992 were set to zero. Any errors should be drawn to the attention of Daniel Feenberg at feenberg@nber.harvard.edu. 1964 - 1988 March CPS Extracts Mare and Winship have prepared a (nearly) uniform subset of the March CPS files from 1964 to 1988. Documentation is in hard copy only. There are 3,491,201 records in total. Because this is a rectangular file (no family or household records) it is very easy to deal with. The files are kept in /home/data/mare_winship and are compressed with the Unix compress command. The following SAS program reads every record in every year, and prepares a weighted count. Note the filename and infile statements that demonstrate how to read and write compressed files in SAS. libname save ','; filename raw pipe 'zcat /home/data/mare_winship/cpsmw??.raw.Z' filename out pipe 'compress >outfile.Z' data; length default=4; infile raw lrecl=386; input year 13-14 famwght 248-259; famwght=famwght/100; file out; put year famwght; run; Users of other packages can use the Unix 'cut' command to make similar extracts. For example: zcat /home/data/mare_winship/cpsmw??.raw.Z|cut-c13-14,248-259 >foo will concatenate all 25 years of data and make a two variable extract.
