Griliches and Maskin

Colleagues --- Just a short note. Some of you might recall that Eric
Maskin, this year's Nobel Prize winner in economics, and Zvi Griliches were
very good friends, and both greatly enjoyed attending classical music
concerts together. Moreover, at Zvi's memorial service at Harvard's
Memorial in January 2000, Eric ended the service by playing on his clarinet,
the Kaddish of Maurice Ravel. I have distinct memories of discussing with
Eric how unfair it was that Zvi was not awarded the Nobel Prize.

Well, last week the Nobel Prize ceremonies were held in Stockholm, with Eric
in attendance as a recipient. You will be touched to learn, as was I, that
Eric invited Diane Griliches to accompany his family to Stockholm, where
Diane was able to observe the Nobel festivities.

What a mensch.

Cheers.

Ernie
