Dear Public Economics Colleagues -

I am writing to share the sad news that Shlomo Yitzhaki, a research
economist affiliated with the NBER's Public Economics program, passed
away recently.   He was the Sam M. Cohodas Professor of Agricultural
Economics, Emeritus, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  He also
served as the Chief Statistician and Director of Israel's Central Bureau
of Statistics.  In 2008, he chaired a commission to assess the rise of
poverty in Israel.

Yitzhaki was an early contributor to the micro-econometric analysis of
taxpayer behavior, studying capital gains realizations with Martin
Feldstein and Joel Slemrod.  He was best known for his research on the
measurement of inequality and for his wide-ranging application of the
Gini coefficient and related metrics to topics in public economics.

Yitzhaki received his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University, and spent time
as a visiting scholar at Harvard and as a research economist at the NBER
early in his career.  He was an active contributor to the public
economics community and he will be deeply missed.
