Dear Research Colleagues -

I am very sorry to share the news that Scott Weisbenner, an affiliate of
the NBER Economics of Aging and Public Economics programs, passed away
this morning after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the William
G. Karnes Professor of Mergers and Acquisitions at the University of
Illinois' Gies College of Business, where he taught for 22 years - his
whole career.

Weisbenner's research ranged widely in public and financial economics.
He made important contributions to the study of corporate payout policy,
the determinants of household stock market participation and trading
behavior, the economic effects of capital gains taxation, and the
investment performance of university endowments.  He was also a very
successful teacher.

Weisbenner received his undergraduate degree from the University of
Wisconsin -Madison and his Ph.D. from MIT.  He was an active and engaged
researcher who contributed to the NBER and many other communities.  He
will be deeply missed.
