difficult decision

I'll send a new address later to everybody at family_at_nber.org, but I
hope it's not too much spam to reach a lot of my closest friends and
colleagues by using the pe and eee list. Kathy and I decided to stay in
Illinois. I'd especially want to thank those of you who helped in my
search. Below is a paragraph I sent to the Econ Dept at Texas with some
further explanation. Thanks. http://works.bepress.com/don_fullerton/

"I apologize for dragging out the job choice, as I know it has been hard
on everybody. It is a difficult decision, and we needed to wait for
information. As announced months ago, Kathy and I had very good offers
from the University of Illinois, with a deadline of April 30. Kathy had
applied for an interdisciplinary job at UT, and was told yesterday that
she is likely to get that job, but would not know the terms until after
the final faculty vote May 7. I very much appreciate all my colleagues at
UT, as well as the location, city, climate, and the fact that my adult
kids live in Austin. Thus it is very hard for me to report that we have
decided to stay at Illinois. It not for any one reason, but for a lot of
complicated reasons. The job here for Kathy is a much better fit for the
next few years. At Illinois she has reduced teaching in the agricultural
economics department, with 30 colleagues in her own discipline, while she
continues to establish a reputation in her own field before any tenure
decision. She is very interested in the interdisciplinary job at UT for
later, but it is risky to take an untenured job with more teaching where
senior colleagues in other disciplines may apply unknown and varied
criteria for that tenure decision. Given the better terms for both jobs
at Illinois, it was hard for me to ask her to turn that down for now."
